When someone at home is unwell, the first question is always the same: should we call a doctor to the house or go straight to hospital? This guide helps you decide. It is general information and does not replace a doctor’s advice. If you are unsure, choose the safer option and get medical help early.
A home doctor visit is a good choice when
- The patient is stable, awake and able to talk
- The problem is a mild or moderate fever, cough, cold, body ache or stomach upset
- An elderly patient needs a routine checkup or medicine review
- The patient has just come home from hospital and needs follow-up
- A child is unwell but is drinking, playing a little and responding normally
- Travelling would be hard because of weakness, pain or limited movement

Go to hospital or call 999 immediately if
- There is chest pain or pressure
- The patient has severe difficulty breathing
- There are signs of stroke: a drooping face, a weak arm or leg, or slurred speech
- There is heavy bleeding
- The patient has a fit or seizure
- The patient is unconscious or very hard to wake
- There is a serious injury, a burn or a head injury
- A very young baby has a fever or is not feeding
- There is a severe allergic reaction, such as swelling of the face or throat

- Stay calm and keep the patient resting.
